Who is Joshua Munday?

If you’re going to ask someone to provide some educational and insightful articles around the subject of capturing perfect guitar tone, you want to make sure that person knows what they’re talking about. Sure there are plenty of people out there that can play countless classic guitar riffs and/or solos, but how many can do so while respecting each original recording’s tone on one electric guitar?

There’s only one person that comes to mind for us. That person is Joshua Munday.

Joshua (or Josh) has been a BOSS/Roland user for most of his guitar playing life and has been working directly with Roland Australia for the past 16 years performing demos and workshops (among other things). He doesn’t consider himself to be BOSS biased though. Instead, Josh is biased towards great guitar tone. He’s even been known to search for great tone in the most unusual of locations.

Josh discovers the secret to that classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ tone.

Josh owns plenty of gear (BOSS included of course) and is a strong believer in the saying ‘He who dies with the most toys wins’. He’s not alone in that belief.

In recent years, Josh has developed quite a name for himself on YouTube thanks to his perfect tonal medleys using various BOSS units. His medley on the BOSS GT-100 has amassed over 90K views and we’re sure his more recent medley on the BOSS ME-80 will perform just as well. He’s not just your average YouTube sensation though with years of experience in studio/session work, live gigs and television performances on shows like Guitar Gods and Masterpieces  (featuring recently in the March 19 episode).

The comments that Josh’s videos have received online suggest there are a lot of people who would like to be able to create and/or capture the tone they’ve been chasing for years in the same way Josh has. So we’ve asked Josh to provide us with some step-by-step guides for replicating famous guitar tones (or any tone for that matter) using the BOSS ME-80 amp simulator multi-effects unit. Luckily for us all, he said yes.

Josh will be showing you techniques that will work on any decent gear that you own (you know if your gear is decent or not). These techniques will be as generic as possible so that no matter what gear you’ve got, they should be adaptable to your own setup.

Still, if the idea of programming tones and/or adjusting your current setup manually doesn’t appeal to you, Josh will also be providing many of his ready-made patches for instant download. How easy is that?! Just download and play with perfect tone in an instant.

As Josh’s videos showcase, with the right gear, you can switch from one tone to another with one simple stomp on your pedal unit. Your biggest issue will soon be deciding which tone to make your new favourite.
